1. T&H Citronella Scented Candle

The first citronella candles on our list are the T&H 2 Tin Citronella Candle set.

It is made from high quality ingredients, with pure soy wax and a lead free organic cotton wick, and are handmade and non toxic. So you know you’re getting quality for your money here.

It has a strong pleasant fragrance and a good burn time of 75 hours, which is definitely sufficient for most people’s needs.

We found this to be a great candle that has been made using high quality ingredients, and that can be used indoors too if you so wish.

The only downside, is that we actually found it not to be as effective for high levels of bugs/mosquitoes as some other candles.

But if you’re in the suburbs and want to get rid of those few pests, it should do the trick.

Pros

  • Works indoors and outdoors
  • Designed to be portable and used for travel
  • Really nice fragrance

Cons

  • May not be as effective if just wanting a mosquito repellent candle

2. Murphy’s Naturals Outdoor Citronella Candle

The Murphy’s Naturals citronella candle stood out to us due to its high quality ingredients, and its great effectiveness at repelling mosquitoes. This candle also contains a variety of different natural oils, including rosemary oil, peppermint oil, citronella oil, lemongrass oil, cedarwood oil, soybean oil and beeswax.

This is a great selection that not only aids the candle in having it’s nice scent but also makes it very effective when it comes to bug repellent.

The candle is also DEET free, with no chemicals or petroleum used.

The burn time is around 30 hours, which is still very good for a candle of this size.

Although visually this candle might not look as appealing in your home as some others, if you’re looking for a portable citronella candle that is extremely effective at repelling bugs and mosquitos, this is a great choice.

Pros

  • Excellent mosquito repellent
  • Uses high quality natural ingredients and essential oils
  • Nice natural fragrance

Cons

  • Might not be as ideal for indoors with the strong scent and less attractive design

3. La Jolie Muse Citronella Candles – 3 Set

The La Jolie Muse candles come in a set of 3, in metal portable tins so again are ideal for transporting and moving around. They are made with natural soy wax, and have an attractive design so are definitely a good hybrid candle for both indoors and outdoors.

They have a strong fragrance that’s very pleasant.

The only downside is that they aren’t quite as effective at repelling mosquitos as some others. But again, if you’re somewhere with a relatively low level of bugs to repel, you should be fine.

Pros

  • Attractive candle
  • Great and strong scent
  • Can be used indoors or outdoors

Cons

  • Not the best at repelling mosquitos

4. Yinuo Outdoor Citronella Candles

The next candles we reviewed are the Yinuo Outdoor Citronella Candles.

These quaint candles come in a pack of four and are made of soy wax for a cleaner burn. They are perfect for camping or to keep on your patio outside.

We found these a good option if you want the flexibility of burning candles in multiple locations, and we also enjoyed their fresh scent.

However, you may need to keep an eye on the wicks as they tend to fall into the wax and get buried.

Pros

  • Flexibility with being able to burn multiple at once
  • Fresh scent

Cons

  • Wicks may fall into wax

5. Yinuo Citronella Garden Candles

Another candle by Yinuo, these pretty looking garden pot citronella candles are a big hit to have out in the backyard. They are made of natural soy wax, have a clean, smokeless burn and can burn for up to 50hrs each. That means they will easily last up to a month or more.

We love that the garden pot design allows you to easily move the candle by the rope, and more importantly that the pots can be reused as plant pots once they are finished.

These candles may have the same issue with the wicks getting buried as above, but with a little work you can straighten them out.

Pros

  • Pretty design
  • Natural soy wax
  • Long burn time
  • Reusable

Cons

  • Wicks may fall into wax

6. Geelywax Citronella Candles

Last but not least on our list is the Geelywax Citronella Candles. This four pack of candles is made from 100% pure soy wax and cotton wicks. They burn for an impressive 25 – 30 hrs each, and the three wick design gives them a nice even burn. They are smokeless and can be enjoyed both indoors or outdoors.

Once again, we love that these tins can be reused as succulent pots so that there is no waste. However, these candles may be too small for some.

Pros

  • Nice design
  • Pure and natural
  • Long burn time
  • Can be used outdoors and indoors
  • Reusable

Cons

  • Too small

Citronella Candle Buyers Guide

How to choose the best citronella candle

When you’re choosing a citronella candle, it can often be difficult knowing which will best suit your needs.

We’ve compiled our list of the best citronella candles, to include different options for some of these needs and done some of the work for you.

However, you need to consider different factors in your choice of a citronella candle.

Some of these factors you should consider when making your choice are:

Burn time

Burn time is important, as you’ll want your candle to last for as long as you need it. There’s no point in choosing a citronella candle that finishes burning too early. So consider the size of the candle, and any information on burn time when making your purchase.

Mosquito repelling quality

If you’re looking for a citronella candle that repels mosquitoes, then you should make sure that you choose one that has been designed for this purpose. Some citronella candles are just made to be pleasant smelling, without too much consideration for being an insect repellent. So it’s important to bear this in mind.

Fragrance

A lot of citronella candles will have a strong citronella fragrance and will be similar to a certain extent. You should also consider the strength of fragrance for your candle and how strong you want it. Not only this, but some have other essential oils added which can alter the fragrance too.

Design

Depending on how you want to use your candle, will determine how you want the candle to look and what features it will have. For example, if you just want a nice smelling citronella candle for indoors, then you’ll likely want an attractive design. However, if you want a citronella candle for repelling insects, then you’re concerns won’t really be the visual design of the candle, but more how well it repels insects and how durable it is (for outdoors) and easy to move around.

Ingredients

The ingredients that go into your candle are also an important factor to consider, for different reasons. If you’re wanting to use more natural products in your candle, then you should look at what type of wax is used, the wick, and also what other oils and ingredients have gone into making your candle. The ingredients and oils used will also affect how cleanly the candle will burn, and how it will smell.

The benefits of citronella candles

The most commonly discussed benefit of citronella candles is that they are effective insect repellents, especially for mosquitoes.

However, alongside this, citronella and citronella oil, also have a multitude of other benefits and properties you may not have been aware of.

The main one of these is citronella’s stress relieving properties, and it has been linked to helping with anxiety and depression, relaxation, and helping with insomnia.

On top of this, citronella is also very effective at masking bad odours.

Safety when burning candles

When burning candles it’s always important to bear safety in mind to avoid any accidents.

The key points to consider when it comes to candle safety are:

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended
  • Burn within sight
  • Place your candle on a heat resistant surface

Alongside this, if you’re burning your candle outdoors, please take note of any fire warnings for your area. You don’t want to start a forest fire because you had an accident with your candle and didn’t heed the warnings.

Summary

When assessing the best citronella candles, the key question in deciding which you should buy should be why you’ll be using it.

The main 2 reasons will be either:

  • You like the smell of citronella so want a pleasant smelling and attractive candle
  • You want the candle as a mosquito repellant

If you’re looking for a citronella candle mainly to use outdoors as a mosquito repellent, then the best choice is the Murphy’s Naturals Citronella Candle.

Not only has this candle been designed for outdoor use, but it also contains lots of great quality ingredients and smells great.

Mainly though, we found it the most effective at actually repelling bugs and mosquitos.

If you want a citronella candle more as you like the smell, then we’d recommend the La Jolie Muse candles.

These are fantastic value and contain a mixture of essential oils making the scent very pleasant, and giving the candles aromatherapy quality.
